This is the Northern or Pink Shrimp. The word borealis means from the north. They are mainly caught in Canada and Iceland. This shrimp is only offered cooked, peeled or unpeeled, at the fish auctions. This shrimp can easily be peeled mechanically because of its loose armour in contrast to, for example, the brown shrimp. Peeled Northern Shrimp that is on offer has always been peeled mechanically.
Confusion sometimes exists around this shrimp species. Often this shrimp species is referred to as Norwegian shrimp instead of Northern shrimp. Other shrimp species, the Penaeid shrimp, are also confused with Northern shrimp and are described as such.
