A day in the life of a shrimp

As any shrimper can tell you, shrimp are not always found at the same spot. Shrimp can often be found in the deeper parts of the Waddenzee in the winter (where the water will have cooled down the least). Shrimp will travel to the shallower parts in the summer, in the direction of the flats and the shore. Here the water will already have warmed up to their liking. Even during the course of a day shrimp do not stand still. Shrimp are active creatures, especially when it becomes dark (during the day they can usually be found buried in the sand). The tide determines their direction. When the tide is high and the flats are submerged, shrimp will search for food and they will leave their gullies and deeper parts and travel to the shallow flats. When the tide is low once more, shrimp will again retreat with the water to the deeper parts. Shrimp, therefore, are not buried in the sand the whole day without moving but are often on the move. They go towards warmer water and where the biggest stock of food can be found.
