The shrimp that Heiploeg processes come for their greater part from shrimping on both the North Sea and all tropical seas. We also obtain a small part from aquaculture. A clearly positive trend that we are encountering these days is social awareness in the area of sustainability in production chains. The above means that the utilisation of natural resources must occur with a minimum of negative consequences on an ecological and social scale to ensure utilisation in the future can be guaranteed.
Heiploeg is aware of the fact it has responsibilities in this area and tries to contribute to this with all the resources it has at its disposal. By becoming acquainted with fishing and cultivation methods, making an inventory of the ecological and social aspects and measuring off certain standards, certain fishing and cultivation regions can be assessed based on their quality. Suppliers can be given an incentive through our purchasing activities to ensure that issues comply with certain sustainability criteria in the long-term. Heiploeg is currently drawing up a policy in which standards will be adopted to be complied with by shrimping and cultivation systems. The intention is that internationally followed standards such as, for example, drawn up by EUREP-GAP for aquaculture or MSC for fisheries, become a condition in the long-term for supplying Heiploeg with shrimp.
