Suriname Atlantic seabob shrimp fishery enters assessment for MSC eco-label

The Suriname Atlantic seabob shrimp has entered full assessment for Marine Stewardship Council certification [1]. If successful, subject to traceability certification, the fishery will be able to display the MSC eco-label on its products. This shows they can be traced back to an independently certified, sustainable and well-managed fishery. The Heiploeg Group [2] has commissioned the assessment on behalf of 30 vessels based in Suriname

The fishery for Atlantic Ssabob shrimp (Xiphopenaeus kroyeri), a small-sized short-lived shrimp, takes place in the coastal waters of Suriname and is located within the Guiana-Brazil Large Marine Ecosystem. Using twinrigged otter trawls, the fishery runs all year round. The seabob trawlers land to the local fleet management of processing companies of Guiana Seafoods (part of the Heiploeg Group) and Namoona. The annual landings are approximately 10,000MT, which is over 90% of the Suriname seabob landings.

Chris Meskens and Ralph Sanders of Morubel NV Belgium, one of the participant companies in The Heiploeg Group and managers of the seabob project say: "The mission of The Heiploeg Group is to further develop the market for shrimp and selected seafood products by excelling at customer relations, innovation and sustainability. We set up this project to improve the sustainability of the seabob fishery to a level suitable for potential MSC certification. To achieve this, we rely on the enthusiastic cooperation of the Suriname Government, the fisheries companies Guiana Seafoods and Namoona and the scientific support of Nautilus Consultants. If this fishery successfully completes full assessment, we really look forward to marketing the first tropical shrimp with MSC certification."

Rupert Howes, CEO of the MSC says: “I am delighted to see another important fishery from Latin America enter full assessment. This is also a great news story even before the final determination of the assessment process – a fishery has come forward in partnership with their customers to work together, supported by the Government, on an initiative that has aimed to improve the fishery to the point we have reached now, to be ready to enter into full assessment. I wish them every success."

The assessment will be carried out by independent certifier Food Certification International.

[1] The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) is an international non-profit organization that was set up in 1997 to promote solutions to the problem of overfishing. The MSC runs the only widely recognized environmental certification and eco-labelling program for wild-capture fisheries.  It is the only seafood eco-label that is consistent with the ISEAL Code of Good Practice for Setting Social and Environmental Standards and the United Nations FAO guidelines for fisheries certification. The MSC has offices in London, Seattle, Tokyo, Sydney, The Hague, Edinburgh, Berlin and Cape Town.

In total, more than 150 fisheries are engaged in the MSC program with 47 certified and 106 under assessment. Another 20 to 30 fisheries are in confidential pre-assessment. Together the fisheries record annual catches of more than 5 million tons of seafood. Of fish for human consumption, they represent more than 42 percent of the world’s wild salmon catch, 40 percent of the world’s prime whitefish catch and 18 percent of the world’s spiny lobster catch.  Worldwide, more than 2,400 seafood products resulting from the certified fisheries bear the blue MSC eco-label.

This year, the MSC celebrates 10 years of operations since the first fisheries entered MSC assessment. For more information, visit www.msc.org

Heiploeg goes organic

12-06-2008

On Tuesday the 20th of May Heiploeg was the first company in the Dutch fish industry to receive the Certificate for Organic Production Nederland from the Dutch certifying body SKAL. The new standard for the processing of organic fish, shellfish and crustaceans has only been set about a month ago and is a private standard accomplished by a co-operation of SKAL, the Dutch Fish Product Board and several parties from the industry itself.

Heiploeg as a company finds itself in the centre of today’s society and always keeps an eye out for social movements and trends as is the growing demand for organic produce. We are definitely proud to be the first to present fresh organic shrimp to our customers!

EurepGAP conference

12-12-2006

On Friday 24th November 2006 a successful ‘ EurepGAP conference on shrimp farming’  was set. A conference during which the standard for shrimp culture was established. This standard consists of a large number of criteria that shrimp farms worldwide will have to meet in order to be granted the EurepGAP certificate. This particular certificate will in the future be a necessity when it comes to supplying the main part of the European and Asian supermarket chains. These retail organizations are all members of the EurepGAP certification system for agricultural products.

Unique composition of technical committee
The Dutch company Heiploeg BV located in Zoutkamp and Europe’s largest importer and processor of shrimp was initiator and host of this ‘shrimp standard’ event. Chairman of the EurepGAP technical committee of shrimp culture and Heiploegs  Product and Quality manager Mark Nijhof says: “It is a big and proactive step to start realizing product improvement at the source. “ Unique within EurepGAP is the use of external advice from NGOs such as WWF, IUCN Netherlands and Oxfam Novib.

Not just the usual criteria
On initiative of Heiploeg and these Non-Governmental Organizations the standard will also consist, of criteria such as animal welfare, ecological and environmental aspects, social labor aspects and social terms concerning the local community in the farming areas, in addition to  the obvious criteria like food safety and product quality. Leo van Mulekom, Oxfam Novib, says: “This standard is the first step in the right direction. Hopefully we will continue this positive dialogue when it concerns the execution.”

Albert Heijn
As the end of the conference neared, Mark Nijhof symbolically presented the first memento of this event to John Oosterhuis, quality manager of Albert Heijn, in acknowledgement of his longtime inspiration and motivation.
